Our mission is to create an artistic sanctuary to tie the strings of music and visual art together and inspire the masses.

(Atlanta, GA) neo-psychedelic indie rock band

In the low light of the hut the old man sat quietly puffing on his mapacho. “You must disengage from your…continuity,” he said, referring I’m sure to my earbuds, which, with apologies, I cranked. As I tapped the last drop out of the clay cup and laid back on the ragged foam mat I saw that the old man’s face was no longer his, but a hawk’s. The spirit-world comes on like that.

The music I came to see with my third eye, Ponderosa’s Pool Party, started with a voice, a silver highlonesome in a mist (or maybe the mist was the voice), an electric guitar that identified itself (verbally, and I’m translating here) as He-who-makes-things-sprout, then a convergence at something analogous to a rain dance, as if conducted (in lapis lazuli) by Keith Moon. Pianos and guitars and harmonies breathed into existence tetrahedrons, Spanish friars, bird-lions, machine elves, Quetzacotl, so forth, and landscapes, always the sweeping, rolling variety. No point going on about what the music looks like. To paraphrase the giant, blazing eye that cries honey, you must see for yourself.

ALEXIS AND THE SAMURAI

It’s fitting you might have caught a glimpse of Alexis & the Samurai’s members Alexis Marceaux and Sam Craft on Treme, HBO’s pantheon to New Orleans musicians. The soulful, young artists are lifelong New Orleanians, with credentials that best that of the cast. The pair’s star has since risen even more furiously with Marceaux’s recent announcement of being a contestant on this fall’s season of NBC’s The Voice.

Exiled after having lost everything in hurricane Katrina, Alexis has spent the last several years returning home and building up a career from scratch. The meantime has been hard-fought but fruitful, with appearances at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Voodoo Music Experience, SXSW, and several tours of the US and Europe.  The two 20-somethings initially teamed up for Alexis’ sophomore effort Orange Moon (2011). Under the tutelage and engineering of The Polyphonic Spree’s Rick Nelson, the duo drew an all-star cast, 25 of NOLA’s finest musicians of every genre, for a big and lush indie-pop opus with a distinct Louisiana flavor. Marceaux released Dandelion in ’09, and its songs were picked up by various television shows (MTV’s The Real World, E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians, etc.), but with Orange Moon, she’s elevated herself into a “songwriting force to be reckoned with” (No Depression), securing more media placements, as well as rotation in Starbucks cafés and other stores.

The duo plans to capitalize on the exposure by taking their multi-instrumental spectacle (strings, guitars, keys, foot percussion, vocal harmonies, often all at once) on the road, as well as by working on a new EP, set for release this winter.

These Mississippi brothers found their hearts in New Orleans years ago. Keeping up with the grind and glamour of musician life in the city: John, Joe, and David Shirley birth, Cardinal Sons. The rhythmic chords and warm harmonies carry a blend of contemporary indie folk with some Nola soul.

The inevitable result of a talent-soaked soul and jazz community, the Funky Knuckles are taking the sound of Dallas to an entirely different level.

The band is comprised of sidemen from some of the biggest artists in the industry (Beyonce, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, P Diddy, etc.), yet possesses a sound distinctly separate from any of their individual projects. Khris Royal is searing his way across the New Orleans music scene. Sculpted at the halls of New Orleans’ legendary Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) and refined at Berklee College of Music, this dynamic saxophonist has already been seen sharing the stage with Erykah Badu, Lettuce, George Porter Jr., Trombone Shorty, “Big Sam”Williams, and many more.

With his progressive-funk outfit, Khris Royal & Dark Matter, Khris is able to sonically break new ground by combining high-energy New Orleans funk with intricate and sophisticated jazz lines.

He was a part of the multi-genre style of DJing that catapulted his adopted Philadelphia to the pinnacle of the DJ world in the early 2000s. His years of seasoning as a DJ have seen him play all styles imaginable all across the US and Europe.

As a part of the duo RCMP, his work foreshadowed the emergence of Nu-Disco before the genre even had a name.

He is an internationally renowned disco edit-maker, appearing on compilations alongside the likes of Todd Terje and Tom Moulton. He has officially remixed global stars as diverse as Wiz Khalifa and Gregor Salto.

He is also is one of the OGs of “Moombahton” – the polyglot global EDM movement that saw DJ Apt One find fame on the BBC, NPR and elsewhere along with pioneers Dave Nada, DJ Sabo, Dillon Francis and more.

GYPSYPHOIC DISKO

Gypsyphonic Disko is the collaboration of Ben Ellman, from the New Orleans funk band Galactic, and NOLA’s most versatile turntablist/producer, Quickie Mart.

How on earth does music get as wild as it does in the Balkans? That’s why Ben Ellman (a.k.a. Galactic sax man) and Quickie tapped into that unruly East-West tradition to create Gypsyphonic Disko, a raucous, multi-culti dance party for the ages. Mashing up the horn blasts and relentless rhythms of Eastern Europe with the laid back beats of hip-hop and funk, GPD takes the Old World into a future where there are no borders. A founding member of the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, Ellman, a long time fan of the pan-Romani music canon, shares the frenzied sounds of Bulgarian wedding music, Hungarian dances and Turkish brass scorchers with masses of New World party people. NOLAPhonic Vol. 1 was nominated as one of the “Top 5 records you need to listen to” in 2009 by Nerve.com, and one of SPIN Magazine’s Top 10 Live Picks of Bonnaroo 2011.

Quickie Mart was born and raised in Louisiana. After spending a couple of years living and hustling on the streets as a teen, he got his start amidst the debauchery of the late night rave and hip hop scene of New Orleans. Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2007 his production and bass remixes have been featured on a number of other independent and major label artists’ projects across a variety of different genres.

Q Mart has done official remixes for artists like Slightly Stoopid, Freddie Gibbs, NOLA bounce legend Ricky B, Galacitc, J-Boogie, and more. He also has produced tracks for featured artists such as Planet Asia, Wax, Percee P, Buff1, Medusa, and Gotham Green, …just to name a few. On top of a heavy grind in the studio producing and remixing, Mart spends most of his time on the road or in the skies bringing his unique bass-heavy style to the sound systems of the world.

Quickie’s accolades include playing large events like SXSW, Vegoose, and Zen Festival. He has been featured twice at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, four years at Voodoo Music Festival, and five years in a row at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. A New Orleans native, former drummer and frontman, Pr_ck has long been surrounded by all types of music and sounds.
He brings these influences to the tables at every set; connecting African psychedelic funk to Chicago juke, all the new sounds of UK funky weaving in and out of southern hip hop, as well as dropping current and nostalgic pop classics in one set.

Pr_ck perfects the art of giving a crowd what they want AND what they didn’t know they wanted.
His commitment to rocking any crowd any where any place has earned the respect of his peers as well as fans.

Pr_ck is one half of producer/DJ duo 8188 with Johnny Sanders aka Five. He is also a founding member of the House of Templum, an artist collective whose focus is on supporting artists, spaces, and parties that are consciously inclusive of people of color and the queer community in New Orleans.

Following 2009’s “It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You”, and 2010’s “Young Blood Blues”, this record does all of the things that a third record ought to do for an outfit like this. There is a joyful acknowledgment of roots and influences from first song to last, but also a firm sense of seeing those influences off and, armed to the teeth with all the musical provisions they’ve gathered along the way, forging forth into creative territories new.

Produced by Andrija Tokic (of Alabama Shakes notoriety), this record displays a much wider range of moods and styles than that which preceded it; it all feels very considered, balanced; it strikes one as being a very important record for the band, one that will impact hugely on what is yet to come.

Having spun this record repeatedly the past few days, two tracks in particular that stand out head and shoulders above the rest:

Firstly: Ode to John and Yoko, easily destined to become a (if not the) crowd favorite – a loving, simple, sweet salute to rock and roll’s favorite doomed couple that caps itself off beautifully with a wholly unexpected tribute coda.

Secondly: Riley, a sepia-tinted, stormy little piece about a jilted woman’s attempt to win back “her man”, only to find herself, at his new lover’s desperate insistence, unable to go through with it. There is a darkness, a great teeming angst, grumbling beneath the surface narrative here that is unlike anything I’ve heard them attempt before – a fine achievement.

I await their next record with great fervor.
